Repel Mosquitoes with the Nutone Haven- Review
I look forward to weeknights spent outdoors in my yard or garden. There are few things better than relaxing outside in my backyard under the moonlight. Problem is – I usually get eaten alive by mosquitoes, and go inside after a few minutes. They ruin my fun, ruin my relaxation, and frankly just piss me off!
This year… yes, this year will be different. I’m going to surround my patio with an invisible force field of state of the art “Stay the Heck Away from Me Mosquito” protection! I installed the Haven Backyard Lighting and Mosquito Repellent System by NuTone.
The Haven Backyard Lighting and Mosquito Repellent System consists of light fixtures that are staked into the ground. Inside the light fixture is a cartridge that’s filled with mosquito repellent. Each fixture has a protection range of 110 square feet (sqft). That means 4 fixtures (which is what I have) protects 440 sqft. For reference, a 441 sqft square patio would measure about 21 ft x 21 ft.
I love the way my new Haven Backyard Lighting and Mosquito Repellent System looks in the yard. It’s not only a mosquito repellent system, it’s a backyard lighting system. In fact, anyone that visits your yard would never think twice about your outdoor lighting system doubling as a mosquito repellent system (until they marvel at the absence of mosquitoes over your patio).
The Haven Backyard Lighting and Mosquito Repellent System is pretty simple to setup if you have some basic DIY skills. You’ll need a Philips screwdriver, wire cutters, a low voltage power transformer, and landscaping cable. The light fixture is mounted to the provided post and secured with a set screw. The stake is secured in the same manner to the opposite end of the post with a set screw.
The mosquito repellent cartridge is inserted into the light fixture. The fixtures are connected to a low voltage power transformer, which is sold separately (this is the one I used). You need to run 2 sets of cables – one for the light circuit and a second for the mosquito repellent circuit.
The Haven Backyard Lighting and Mosquito Repellent System comes with wire tap connectors to connect the fixtures to the landscaping cable. The connectors consist of 3-pieces – an adapter for either 16-18 gauge or 14-16 gauge landscaping cable, and a 2 piece connector. The bottom connector piece holds the landscaping cable. The top piece screws into the bottom piece and pierces (taps) into the landscaping cable. You then push the wire leads from the fixture into the top of the wire tap. It’s recommended to use dialectic grease to ensure a protected connection. This is repeated two times for each circuit (lighting and mosquito repellent) This is a simple and quick process that took me about 10 minutes for 4 fixtures. They can then be connected to an optional timer (sold by NuTone), and connected to each other with landscaping cable.Using the timer is great because you can setup your Haven Backyard Lighting and Mosquito Repellent System to turn on and run for as long as you want every night. That way you never need to worry about turning them on or forgetting to turn them off.
Since I’ve had the system installed I’ve noticed a sharp decline in mosquitoes flying around me when i’m within the protected zone.
It’s a breath of fresh air to be able to sit in my backyard in the evening without swatting at mosquitoes the whole time! Plus, my backyard looks absolutely serene with the soft light of the Haven Backyard Lighting and Mosquito Repellent System illuminating my patio.
If you already have backyard lighting, or just want the mosquito repellent feature for your yard, NuTone also makes a Haven Backyard Mosquito Repellent System without the lighting. It works just as good as the Haven Backyard Lighting and Mosquito Repellent System, but produces no light.
