How to Make Homemade Mayonnaise & Tartar Sauce
Did you know that it is super easy to make your own homemade mayonnaise? With a few simple ingredients that you probably have in your home you can whip up a tasty batch of homemade mayonnaise in no time. There is a slight trick to it, so your first batch may be a learning experience, but have faith.
I have been making my own homemade mayonnaise with extra virgin olive oil for a while now, and it is so yummy. You can use canola oil as well, but I was aiming to make it a wee bit healthier with the olive oil. The recipe produces 3/4 of a cup of mayonnaise, and it will keep if placed in the fridge for around 3 days.
Here is my recipe I follow:
1 large egg yolk
1 teaspoon white wine vinegar
1/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard
squeeze of lemon juice (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt plus more to taste
1/2 teaspoon of pepper (optional)
1/2 teaspoon of onion, garlic powder (optional)
3/4 cup olive, or canola oil *divided*
Homemade mayonnaise tastes great in tuna, chicken, and ham salad. It also make the perfect complement to almost every sandwich, or burger.
Did you know it is just as easy to make your own tartar sauce? Simply add chopped pickles, or relish, to your homemade mayonnaise, and voila! Our’s truly was from scratch because we pickled our own cucumbers this past summer. You can view how to do that as well if you’d like right on our site.
