Low on Gardening Space? Not a Problem Thanks to the Florafelt Vertical Garden Planter!
I’m always looking for new, innovative ways to grow plants. Sure, your standard pot or window box looks great, but they’re pretty standard in terms of concept and design. Recently, I became interested in living walls. Walls that are adorned with loads of bright, lively plants that make a space pop with life and color.
Building and designing your own living wall, can take a lot of time and resources. I scoured the web for innovative, pre-made living wall kits. Many kits looked like something I could easily build myself out of PVC pipe and old pots, but I was looking for something different, and unique… This is when I found Plants On Walls.
Plants On Walls was founded by Inventor/Entrepreneur, Chris Bribach. Inspired by organic ideas and architectural design, Chris set out to design a living wall system that could be manufactured with sustainable material. What he ended up with, is truly an innovative, sustainable, and creative way to grow living walls.
Plants On Walls makes a vertical wall system called the Florafelt Vertical Garden Planter. The Florafelt Vertical Garden Planter is made from a patented material called Florafelt, which is 100% recycled PET (the same material plastic bottles are made from). The Florafelt is stretched out to accept 4-6 inch potted plants. After watering, the Florafelt slowly wicks moisture to the plants, while providing good aeration for the root system, which eventually grows into the felt.
Setting up the Florafelt Vertical Garden Planter was really easy. The planter comes fully assembled, so all you need to do is stretch out the pockets to accept the plants. I was a little careful at first when stretching out the first pocket, because I didn’t want to accidentally rip the Florafelt away from its backing. After using some pretty substantial force to stretch the pocket, I quickly realized the strength and quality of this product. You can actually use a pole or something similar to aid in stretching the pocket as well.
After that, go find yourself a good location to hang the planter. I like the option of being able to hang the planter from the mounting tabs, or permanently install it to a wall or fence by driving screws through the backing. I hung my planter onto the inside of my 6-foot tall barricade fence.
Inside my Florafelt Vertical Garden Planter, I planted 3 Kale plants in the bottom pouch, 3 Arugula plants in the next pouch up, and a 4 inch pot sized Pansies inside each of the top two pouches. Therefore, I chose a portion of the fence that receives full sunlight, since that is the requirement for these plants.
The Florafelt Vertical Garden Planter has a unique feature that helps keep the plant roots intact while evenly contacting the soil. They’re call “Root Wrappers”. The Root Wrappers wrap around the root and soil ball of the plant, and allow you to change the location of your plants really easily.
Wrapping the roots of the plants with the root-wrappers took getting used to at first, but the directions are well written and straight forward. By the second plant, I had the hang of wrapping the roots, and completed the rest of the plants in minutes.
Did I mention that these planters have built-in drip lines? They do! Therefore, you can choose to water by hand, or hook them up to your drip irrigation system. If you add more panels of Plants On Walls, they can bee hooked up together, so all of them can easily be watered by your drip irrigation system.
Overall, I love the way the Plants On Walls Florafelt Vertical Garden Planter looks on my fence. I’m hoping to buy more sections soon, so I can add to my living wall. Florafelt Vertical Garden Planters are very well built, and are made out of 100% recyclable materials. Plus, they are manufactured in the USA!
