Tips on Being a Healthier Guy
In light of the recently passed Earth Day, I thought I’d have my husband, Jared share some health tips for guys. As a couple, and family, we like to live like it is Earth Day everyday around here. That is why both Jared and I feel it is important to share our love for a product that has the same eco-friendly values as us.
Ladies, could that special guy in your life use some help in the healthy living department? Whether it be your father, brother, husband or friend I am sure they could all benefit from these Tips on Being a Healthier Guy from Jared. Just like our earth, we only have one body in this life, and we really need to take care of it, and nourish it with natural products that also are environmentally friendly. Now, onto Jared’s tips that could actually be beneficial to both men & women… We only get one body in life, so it’s important to take good care of it.
When I was a teenager and in my early twenties, I didn’t pay much attention to my health. I was born with a fast metabolism, so I never gained excessive weight, and my energy level was always sky high. I ate whatever I wanted, and even smoked for a short period of time. I’d lounge around after school or work playing video games while eating chips or candy. My only exercise was either working on my car or going up and down my apartment stairs. By my mid twenties I developed a bad case of acid reflux disease, was weak, and had greasy skin.
My back always hurt, and I would get frequent headaches. I looked okay on the outside, but my lifestyle was doing a number on my insides. It was time for a change. I began reading a ton of material on being healthy and incorporated a lot of the things I learned into my lifestyle. Where am I today? I’m 31 years old. I feel great and I’m the strongest I’ve ever been. I’m acid reflux free and don’t get frequent headaches any more. I began using more natural body care products and eat way more fruits and vegetables than I ever did in my younger years. Below are a few things that I’ve incorporate into my lifestyle that helped me be healthier. Try incorporating these things in our life to help you live a healthier lifestyle.
Limit alcohol & don’t smoke:
I love beer! In fact, I would drink it for every meal, except breakfast. The problem with that is the alcohol content. Alcohol does a number on your liver and it’s a depressant, so it can make you feel lazy and rundown. It’s perfectly okay to have a drink or two once or twice a week, just don’t over do it too often. Smoking, as I’m sure we all know, is detrimental to our health. It affects our lungs, heart, skin, and even sex drive. Avoid it like the plague. Opt for herbal teas and water: The number one best thing you can drink for health is water. I know some of you don’t like water because it has no flavor – wah, wah… It doesn’t change the fact that water is the most bio-available liquid available to all life on earth. However, if you feel the need for flavor in your water, make tea. Green tea is a great choice because it’s loaded with antioxidants that fight cell destroying free-radicals in our bodies.
We can’t eat perfect enough (at least most of us) to get all the essential vitamins through our diet alone. Take vitamin D for example, according to Web MD there are over 3 million cases of vitamin D deficiency cases per year in the US. Only natural sunlight and a few foods can produce vitamin D in our bodies, so vitamin D supplementation is usually necessary to ensure you have enough of it. The same goes for a lot of the other vitamins our body needs to thrive and operate at its optimal level. Take a high quality multi vitamin and a high quality liquid vitamin D of at least 2000 IU capsule daily.
With 3 kids running around on me every morning, I rarely have time to make myself a breakfast. Some milk, yogurt and a scoop of protein powder in the blender makes a quick, nutritious breakfast on the fun.
This is an obvious one. Fruits and vegetables contain tons of vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber. They help fight disease and supply our bodies with much needed nutrition. Devote time for devotionals or meditation: Unwinding with a good devotional book, or literally just taking sitting in silence meditating on your day can help you to distress. All too often we are go, go, GO and it can take a toll on our spirits and mind. Get moving: Have you heard that sitting is the new smoking? I don’t think it should be put that harshly, but I do agree that too much inactivity is harmful to our health.
The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity at least five days per week, or 25 minutes intense aerobic activity at least 3 days per week for overall cardiovascular health. Staying active not only helps your heart, it improves your overall health and well-being. Exercise improves blood flow all over your body and sweating helps eliminate toxins. An active person sleeps better and is more energetic throughout the day.
Both my wife and I prefer to use natural toothpaste like Tom’s of Maine. We like the fact that we can read and pronounce all the listed ingredients and they are derived from natural sources. Our bodies are inundated with potentially harmful chemicals on a regular basis, so eliminating chemicals from the products we use like toothpaste can go a long way in preventing unforeseen issues down the road. For the past two years we have been using Tom’s of Maine Peppermint toothpaste. I love that they now have the Luminous White Toothpaste at Target. It tastes great, and YES it does whiten teeth which is perfect for summer. It is a toothpaste the whole family can use which is perfect for us. We try to live simple, and basic so having just a few HBC products around is ideal. Actually when it comes to Tom’s of Maine, they were the first natural brand I started to use, and buy. All products are free of artificial dyes, fragrances, flavors and preservatives, and are never tested on animals. Beyond natural personal care products, Tom’s of Maine has been caring for communities, and the planet as a whole, for over 45 years. Use Natural Deodorants like the new Tom’s of Maine® Wicked Cool! and NorthWoods Antiperspirant: Around the same time I switched to natural toothpaste, I also switched from conventional deodorants to natural ones. I have used salt based ones, and even the Apricot variety from Tom’s of Maine®. Honestly, they were good, but they didn’t help me to prevent sweaty pits. I am so thankful Tom’s of Maine has the newer NorthWoods Antiperspirant (available at Target). I like to use this at the gym, and my wife enjoys the Wicked Cool! They both smell awesome, natural, and earthy. While I am certainly not perfect, these are the steps I am taking to be healthier so that I can be around for many years for my family. It is never too late to start being a healthier guy. Consider making these small changes in your life to live more natural, be stronger, and less stressed. By using Tom’s of Maine products, you can live like it is Earth Day everyday! Save at Target with a cartwheel offer for Tom’s of Maine products like: Luminous White, North Woods, and Wicked Cool!
