Why I Love My Credit Card
What feels like many moons ago, I turned 18 and got my first credit card solicitation in the mail. It was from Visa and was marketed as the perfect first-time credit card. The limit was a mere $250 then, and the interest rate 18%. I had been working for almost four years steadily at that point and felt a surge of responsibility race through me.
I choose the pink confetti card design and opted to be approved by phone.
That was my first real adult encounter.
My parents helped me to be responsible with my card, and I always paid it in full when the statement arrived. Owning that card gave me a sense of freedom, maturity, and flexibility to move ahead in life. In 2 years time, I built up my credit history, bought a new car, and had all my utilities put in my name.
I was a responsible adult.
Then, the credit card offers really started rolling on in! Almost every other day, new offers promised me points for spending, o% APR, or cash back. I decided to accept one more card. Immediately, my credit limit was increased to $7500 with a 14% APR. This card was obtained when I was almost 21 and has been my go-to card since then. For the past 12 years, I have been earning points on my transactions that turn into freebies like gift cards, and prizes.
I don’t use my credit card to buy just anything, though. Since I always have the money in the bank for purchases I make, I solely use my card to get those points to turn into fun!
Over 10 years time here are some of the items I have exchanged my hard-earned credit card points for:
Starbucks Gift Cards
Fandango Gift Cards
Home Depot Gift Cards
Target Gift Cards
In total, I have earned almost $1,000 in gift cards and cash back. For some, that might bot be a big deal, but for me, it works. I have no balance rotating on my credit card, and I pretty much earn this stuff for FREE!
