Upcycled Holiday Card Garland & Our Hallmark Christmas Traditions
The holiday season is such a magical time of year for our family. Christmas music, Hallmark Cards, decorating, and time spent together as a family is so cherished. This year we have something extra special to be thankful for with our new home. I was asked by Carusele to participate in the #HallmarkAtWalgreens campaign, sponsored by Hallmark at Walgreens. Although I have been compensated, all opinions are my own.
Would you believe we even have two Christmas trees this year? I could not wait to put up my 7-foot artificial tree which is a tradition, and we all mutually agreed that we needed a real one this year too! Our real tree is super tiny but full and sits right in our family room. Our larger tree with the family ornaments on it is beautifully displayed in our den for all to see.
This heartfelt time of year holds so many traditions for our family. In the month of December, we bake cookies, decorate our tree(s), listen to our favorite Christmas music, and buy presents for each other.
Our favorite gifts from the kids are Hallmark Cards with special pictures, and notes inside. For us, there is nothing more sentimental than a handwritten card. I have all the cards my kids have either purchased or made saved in a box from the past years. These are special memories that I will cherish forever all tucked away for years to come.
We recently made our annual trip to Walgreens on Black Friday to not only score some amazing deals, but choose our Hallmark 2017 Ornaments, pick up some Hallmark Cards, a few Secret Santa gifts, wrapping paper, and bows.
They have so many gorgeous designs with the perfect heartfelt messages inside.
My favorite line is the Signature Hallmark Card line that is truly a gift and card in one.
The choices of cards were really hard, but I think I found the perfect 3 for my kiddos.
We also picked up some Hallmark Boxed Holiday Greeting Cards for friends, neighbors, and classmates.
My oldest has so much fun personalizing each card for her friends.
Walgreens had the cutest selection of Hallmark Ornaments and let me tell you, we took forever to settle on which to purchase.
I love how Charlie Brown is holding his little tree…too cute!
Mr. Potato Head is not part of the Peanuts gang, but he is still cute!
As you can see, Walgreens had so much Hallmark Inspirations wrapping paper in the prettiest prints. I kind of wanted to buy them all and wrap up my house. I even picked up some Hallmark Peanuts Stickers and Snowmen.
Can’t forget the present bows either, Hallmark Inspirations line pretty much has you covered this year! I love the pre-made gift bags too they had already made up around the card sections. I snagged several for teacher gifts!
Walgreens has some fun promos to take advantage of to save on your Christmas & holiday supplies:
- 11/27 – 12/2: Buy 2 Get 1 Free on Hallmark and Inspirations from Hallmark Gift Wrap and tape
- 11/27 – 12/16: Buy One Get One 50% off on Hallmark and Image Arts Boxed cards
Some extra goodies were also picked up from Walgreens –they have so much stocking stuffers!
Since my kids are really into crafting this year they totally suggested that I share this Upcycled Holiday Card Garland craft which is kid-friendly, and a great way to re-use Christmas cards!
While I did not cut any of the cards my kids gave me (those are tucked away safely), we did have stacks and stack of holiday cards from friends and family. The stacks were growing each year because of our three kids having so many friends. My oldest gets the credit for this idea to cut them into ornaments and make a tree garland.
For this post, I made a sample of what my kids will be crafting this week each day after school to fill our little fluffy real tree.
Here is what you will need to make this Upcycled Holiday Card Garland:
- Old Christmas Cards from past years- *Hallmark Cards make the best-upcycled crafts*
- Christmas String
- Scissors *I used adult ones for the example, but please be safe with kid’s scissors if they are helping*
- Small mason jar cap to trace
- Silver craft sticker foam
Gather the cards you want to use and arrange them so you can possibly cut out two circles from each.
Trace the circles, and cut them out.
Cut the length of string you want your garland to be. Tie off each end.
Flip the card circles to the correct position to be taped. You want the cards to face the right way!
Tape the string to each card and flip over.
Now, you just need the little ornament topper.
Cut the craft foam sticker sheet into 1/2 inch rectangles.
Remove the sticker from half of the rectangle and adhere.
Hang your Upcycled Holiday Card Garland on your tree and enjoy!
