Like most people I know, I am already ready for Winter to end! Honestly, today’s beautiful sunshine gave me a glimmer of Spring Fever when I took my morning walk. As the below zero wind chill blew into my eyes, and ears I was suddenly reminded that we still have quite a ways for all things Spring.
I admit, I sort of hate the winter. The only thing I enjoy about this season is Christmas and that has already come and gone. I am so ready for pink, purple, and yellow flowers, birds, and for my dry skin issues to end. I swear, it is a never ending battle in the winter to keep my entire body’s skin healthy, supple, and hydrated. Just one too many hot showers, or lack of exfoliation, and my skin is flaky, dry and just plain gross.
Since I live in New England where the weather can go from 60 to below zero in just 24 hours, I know what works to help combat dry, winter skin. Of course, these remedies, and or products work wonders for me, but results may vary for you. However, if you suffer from dry, itchy and lackluster winter skin, you will want to try these tips out..who knows, maybe they could help you to!
1. Skip the super hot showers- Sure, taking a hot shower may be temporarily a dream come true, but honestly it strips your skin of it’s natural oils, and moisture. Same happens when you repeatedly wash your hands throughout the day. There is nothing worse than having dry arms, legs, and even an itchy belly. By keeping shower water at warm you save yourself from potential irritation, and dry spells.
2. Make sure shaving razors are not dull, and you use Shaving Cream/Gel– Ok, so admit it, your legs probably are a little hairier than what they would be like in the spring or summer. That means when we shave, chances are our razor blades need to work much harder. When we shave it actually removes the top layer of the skin which already can makes legs dry and itchy. By using a new or sharp razor blade, and shaving cream we help to ensure we are not drying out our legs.
3.. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, and Exfoliate! Ok so after shaving my legs, I have found that my skin looks much more healthier and appears less flaky when I exfoliate my skin. I use my own orange energizing sugar scrub which you can easily make yourself. This not only removes dead skin cells, but it helps to lock in moisture because it contains coconut oil.
4. Drink plenty of water-while this may seem like a no brainier, drinking a ton of water in the winter is not as easy as drinking a ton in the Summer. I myself find my face glows when I get in at least a half gallon of water per day. Plus, water helps to flush out toxins from our bodies, and fuels our bodies largest porganwhich is our skin. Without water skin is not only dry, and lackluster, but it can also become dehydrated, and sunken in.
5. Use hydrating lotions like Vaseline® Intensive CareTM Advanced Repair Lotion– I don’t know about you, but during winter time I depend on quality lotions that heal my skin. Since I am a mom of three, my hands are forever being washed, and they often dry out quickly if I do not use lotion. I personally love a non-fragrance lotion so that is why I prefer Vaseline® Intensive CareTM Advanced Repair Lotion. I recently took the Vaseline Challenge and used their Vaseline® Intensive CareTM Advanced Repair Lotion for 5 days. The challenge was to see, and feel just how much more nourished and healthy my skin looked after using this product for a consecutive period of time. I have to say, my hands were notorious for getting so dry that they would crack.
Thankfully, by applying Vaseline® Intensive CareTM Advanced Repair Lotion several times per day, I was able to lock in my skin’s moisture, and say Hello to radiant, healthy and soft hands. I purchased this non-greasy lotion at my local Walmart Supercenter, and it was just under $6 for a whopping 24.5 ounces of lotion!
I hope you can find relief from your dry, winter skin with these easy and helpful tips!
