5 Ways Your Dog Can Help You Become Healthier #MySmartDog

When we welcomed our Chiweenie (Chihuahua/dachshund mix) dog Beasley into our lives almost 3 years ago I had no idea the ride we were in for. We were at the point in our family where we knew we were done having kids, but wanted a dog to complete our home. It’s funny to reflect on because we had no idea just how much love, loyalty, and compassion our dog would bring into our lives in just 2 1/2 years.
Ok, so having a dog is not all sunshine and butterflies at first. Our dog was super hard to house train, and would chew all our kid’s toys up. She needed some mega dental work, and had a mild case of anxiety. Thankfully, now she is better and no longer has bathroom accidents. Little “Beaz” as my son calls her has actually made our family much more healthier strangely enough.
Did you know that getting a dog can help you become healthier too? Here is how:
Dog Can Help Improve Your Mood: No matter how angry I can get from the hustle and bustle of life, my dog is always more than willing to come lick me and make me feel better. She knows when I am upset and does her best to provide me with comfort by sitting at my feet while I work. This in turn leads me to petting her which actually is proven to relieve stress. Nowing she is there for me no matter what makes us smile.
Physical Activity: Having a dog is a great way to get out and be active. My little dog loves to run around with my kids in the back yard and play chase. She also is always “game” to go for a walk! She gets so excited when she sees her little yellow harness and pink leash. It is as if she is a kid learning that she is going to the park once those accessories come out.
Hiking, walking, and even running are great ways for you and your pet to stay active and healthy. We typically prefer evening walks because during the summer it is hot. I do not want my dog to get heat stroke so walking when the sun starts to set is ideal for us both. By using a reflective harness made for small dogs we give her the support she needs without possible injury.
Immune System: When I first started out as a dog mom I was obsessed with disinfectants, and cleaners. I thought I had to eliminate every germ that entered my home. Then my pediatrician told me that having a dog was a great way to introduce my young kids to germs that would help build their immunity up. I had no idea this was possible, but it seems to be working since my kids hardly ever get ill.
Companionship: When you have a dog, you never have to feel alone. No matter what mood you are in, or what kind of day you had your dog will always be there for you. My mom’s dog was a great companion to her when she lost my father. He kept her busy, and would watch tv with her, eat with her, and go to bed with her. He truly helped her heal and grieve from the inside out.
Routine: Having a dog is similar to having children in that they need routines. My dog knows when she has to go out at night to pee, when it is time for her to go to her crate, and when it is time to wake up. If you are a person who is seeking a routine, consider a pet. They can help you get your life on track and be held accountable.
