DIY Wooden Birdhouse Plans & A New Tasty Coffee
This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of The J.M. Smucker Company. The opinions and text are all mine. @Folgers @Walmart
Woodworking and building things with my hands is one of the most soothing past times for me. I love nothing more than to be in my element, in my workshop creating wooden projects. Lately, things have been so hectic because we are moving this month. Unfortunately, that means less time to spend on my favorite hobby. However, I was recently able to sneak in a quick DIY Wooden Birdhouse & a delicious cup of Folgers Simply Gourmet Natural Vanilla Coffee.
The idea to build a medium-sized birdhouse came from the fact that we are leaving our current one behind. Our new home is set adjacent to a farm and forest so there is so much nature around. I eventually would love to create a birdhouse for each of my kids, but for now this one will be the first. My kids love to eagerly await nests in their birdhouses so this one with go right above our deck.
Since I like to go as natural as possible most of the time I wanted to stain this birdhouse with concentrated coffee to give it a rustic, natural look. I am sure the birds will appreciate a chemical-free home for the winter. Speaking of natural, have you spotted the all new Folgers Simply Gourmet Natural line of coffees at your local Walmart? I am all about coffee, and love trying new blends. I actually introduced my wife to coffee and now she shares the love with me.
Vanilla is definitely my favorite coffee flavor, so the Folgers Simply Gourmet Vanilla flavor is perfect for me. It is smooth, contains no artificial flavors, and is loaded with natural vanilla taste. It comes in 10 ounce bags and is also available in Simply Gourmet Caramel, Chocolate, and Cinnamon –which might be Amy’s favorite flavor.
While in my workshop, enjoying a hot cup of coffee is one of the best feelings. For purposes of this post, I assembled this birdhouse upstairs but cut it in my basement.
I have included the plans for this birdhouse which you can conveniently find above.
DIY Wooden Birdhouse Supplies:
- 2′ x 2′ sheet of 1/2″ thick plywood
- 1/4″ dowel
- 1″ Brad nails
- Wood Glue
- Tools needed:
- Table saw, circular saw, or band saw
- 1 1/2″ hole saw
- 17/64″ drill
Speed square or combination square is helpful for marking cuts
*See plans image below for directions on assembly.
Now to stain this birdhouse, you can use traditional stain and sealer. I am opting for a coffee stain, and simple wax. I actually love the weathered look of wood so this will just get prettier to me as the years go on. Plus, the little birds will probably appreciate a more natural environment.
Here is what you will need for the coffee stain:
- 6 ounces of strong brew, black coffee
- 1 foam brush
Lay out newspaper around your work area
Dip sponge brush in to coffee
Brush entire surface
Allow it to dry and repeat to obtain desired color.
Keep in mind some woods like poplar have tight grain so they will absorb the coloring less.
What are some things you do to enjoy me time with a good cup of coffee? Will you be heading to Walmart to purchase one or all of the new Folgers Simply Gourmet Coffees? You will easily find it in the coffee aisle.
I cannot wait to try the Chocolate and Caramel flavors myself! So far the Vanilla is amazing!
