Homemade Dog Biscuits & The Purina 28-Day Challenge

When my family first adopted our little dog almost 3 years ago, it was quite the roller coaster ride. I had never owned a dog before hand so I didn’t exactly realize just how important proper nutrition was. I would admittedly buy my dog whatever food was on sale alternating between kibble and soft foods. I didn’t realize just how detrimental it was to her overall well being until I wet to the vet and they recommended a more structured diet.
No more switching between soft foods, and cheap kibble. For our little pooches case, it also meant no more table scraps. That took some getting use to since we had a small toddler at the time, but things really started to look up once our family took the Purina 28-Day Challenge.
Honestly, I never realized just how important a well balanced diet was for a pet. I was feeding my own family nutritious foods, but my pet was getting what was convenient for me. Once I accepted the Purina 28-Day Challenge I was determined to get my dog to the best health possible.
Besides being a furry little garbage disposal my pooch was lazy, and her coat was dull and lackluster. She preferred to be left alone and only came out of her “cave” to eat, drink, and use the bathroom. That was back in May of 2014 pre-28-Day Challenge. Then, once I picked out some Purina One Smartblend Lamb & Rice formula, small changes started to take place.
My once lazy and chubbier little pooch started to enjoy her feedings, and stopped hunting my home for fallen table scraps. Her coat started to shed less, and took on a nice sheen, and by golly she actually lost weight–1.2 lbs to be exact, and a little over a year later, she has kept it off!
Now, to maintain the benefits of the 28-Day Challenge we buy the 31 lb bag of Purina One Smartblend Lamb & Rice formula from Walmart. They have the best price on it, and my dog is hooked! The bag lasts her quite a while since she doesn’t eat that much!
Since doggy life wouldn’t be complete without treats, I started making my own from scratch which is actually easy. By using whole ingredients like whole wheat flour, peanut butter, and honey my dog gets delicious treats that even my kids approve of. Yes, that’s right, my kids love these DIY dog biscuits too!
To make these homemade dog biscuits you will need:
- 1 cup of All Natural Peanut Butter
- 2 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- 1 cup of water
- 1 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
Then, add every ingredient into a mixing bowl, and mix with clean hands. The dough will be slightly sticky, but the peanut butter helps to bind it and make it sort of stick-free once you start working with it. I needed a very slight dusting of whole wheat flour to roll out the dough about 1/4 inch+ thickness. These will not spread so you can put them really close together on the baking sheet too!
After 20 minutes, they will be ready and slightly springy to the touch. They are safe for dogs that have no diet restrictions, and also kids since they use regular ingredients. They are not sweet at and stay fresh for about a good week in an air-tight container.
