We used to suffer from excessive moisture in our old home’s basement. That house was built in 1940, so it had a field stone foundation. If you’re at all familiar with that type of foundation, you’ll be familiar with the seemingly unstoppable moisture that permeates the limestone mortar that fills the gaps between stones.
Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a basement overhaul, we elected to use a portable dehumidifier. It reduced the moisture enough to prevent mold from growing on the wood in my workshop, but the darn thing would never shut off. It was terribly inefficient and added unnecessary dollars to the electric bill.
We’ve since sold that home, and moved into a brand new home. We left that old dehumidifier behind, because we knew the new owners would need it!
Our new house has an unfinished basement that doesn’t leak one bit. That was a huge win, but despite the fact that the basement walls didn’t leak, the basement still got humid even to the point that the water pipes would condensate! I knew what we needed right away – another dehumidifier.
There are a lot of dehumidifiers to chose from, but few brands have as much expertise in dehumidifying air as Honeywell.
The Energy Star Honeywell 70 Pint Dehumidifier DH70PW was our ultimate choice.
First off, It’s designed to remove up to 70 pints of moisture from the air in medium to large rooms per day. That’s an incredible amount of liquid!
In addition to that, the DH70PW is Energy Star rated. It earns the Energy Star rating for it’s smart controls that runs the dehumidifier automatically based on the air’s relative humidity. Besides that, you can program the DH70PW to turn on and off according to a built in digital timer. This kind of flexibility and efficiency is one of the main features that makes this an attractive machine.
One of my favorite features on the Honeywell 70 Pint Dehumidifier is the built-in vertical pump. The difference between the DH70W and DH70PW is the built-in pump. The extra money spent for the built in pump could give you dozens of more options for placement of this dehumidifier.
Let me explain…
The built-in vertical pump allows you to automatically pump collected water from the storage tank into a drain or out a window located at or above the same level as the storage tank. The unit comes with a 5 meter (16.4 ft) long tube that quickly and easily connects to the back of the machine. That means, you can place the DH70PW wherever you want as long as the 5 meter tube can reach the place you want to water to go. You can stick the tube out a window or in a sink without worrying about emptying out the storage tank or finding a floor drain to run a garden hose to.
The Honeywell 70-Pint Dehumidifier – DH70PW is a nice looking machine. It looks nice enough to use inside a home living space because of its attractive design. We only need it in the basement, but would have no reservations about using it in our living room.
