How to Find the Perfect Dog Breed for Your Family
“We are AKC Ambassadors. All views expressed are that of our own.”
When my family and I were looking for the perfect dog breed for our family we felt like it was almost a gamble. We spent hours researching which dog breeds were a fit for kids, and what to expect from different pups. I can’t even count how many days we searched local rescues to see if we connected with any dogs. In the end, we made a decision based on our hearts, and a chose a pet over 600 miles away in West Virginia, and she might have not been the best decision.
Do I love my chihuahua and dachshund mix? Yes!
However, she is not exactly the playful pup we imagined. Rather than going with a breed that would actually interact with us, I went off a dog that reminded me of a past pooch that had passed away. It took about a year to settle our little fur girl into our family, but now three years later and we love our little “cat dog”. I call her a cat because she loves to be alone, hates dog toys, and interacts with us when she feels like it–just like most cats!
In the beginning, I doubted my decision most days because our small dog wasn’t exactly working out. Thankfully, she grew on our hearts and we decided to give her a chance rather than have her return to her no-kill shelter. While I am so glad I kept our little Beasley, I would never want anyone to have to go through the same issue as we had.
Thankfully, the American Kennel Club has really made the process of How to Find the Perfect Dog Breed for Your Family so easy with their two valuable online tools called: Breed Selector and You vs. Breed.
