How to Make Speckled Eggs

As many of you know, I love to decorate my home. I have a natural draw to all things farmhouse and loves white, brights, and neutral colors. I used to be a primitive decor fan, but I have migrated to the much brighter feel of farmhouse chic.

Over the years, I have come to find that often times, farmhouse style furniture and decor pieces are a pretty penny. People pay astronomical amounts for scratched up furniture that has been white washed. I have made many of my own pieces to tailor my home’s style and budget.

After several trips to local craft and decor stores I realized that the speckled eggs they were selling this year just didn’t fit my color vibe. They were either speckled with what looked like blood spatter, or too bright for my liking. Plus, the prices were outrageous! Almost $10 for a little bag of eggs is a big no-thank you in my book!

So, I decided to go the crafty route to make my own. I purchased some DIY Easter Eggs (available at Oriental Trading) and some pastel, flat colored paints. I wanted neutral, pastel colors so I settled on these which all mesh together really well.

Speckled eggs craft supplies

• White Craft Eggs
• Toothbrush
• Newspaper
• chip brushes (4)
• plastic plate to squeeze paints onto
• Americana Paints

Make them

Squeeze out your paint colors onto an area to dip them from.

I used 4 colors so divided my eggs into groups of 3.

I painted only one half of each first and then put them in the carton. This can get a little messy but since these are farmhouse style, a few streaks or spots can add character.

Paint all the halves of your eggs the colors you chose. Allow them to dry to the touch.

Once they are dry, flip them over and paint the other sides. Allow these sides to dry.

Touch up any areas you may want to fix.

Place eggs on a parchment, cardboard, or newspaper-lined area.

Squeeze out a little of your brown paint and dab a toothbrush head in it.

Gently run your fingers over the bristles to fleck the paint onto the eggs.

You will need to do one side at a time.

Once other side dries, flip them around to fleck the paint on those sides.

Tips

If you are painting run of the mill plastic eggs it will be harder for the paint to stick if you wash your brush in between colors. This is why I suggest using different brushes. You can keep them moist by wrapping them in plastic bags in between use.

White Craft Eggs work the best for this project and hold the paint better than plastic eggs which can scratch easily.

Decorating with speckled eggs

This crafty egg DIY produced some of the prettiest speckled eggs I have ever seen. They are so versatile and can be styled in a decorative nest, added to a basket, or bucket. Styled on tiered tray stands or made into Easter Tree ornaments.
