American Chopped Suey with Sausage
Have you ever wondered about the the story of how Ragu was created? I had never pondered the thought until recently when I visited the Ragu home page and clicked on “Our Story“. I was fascinated to learn that Ragu was created by an Italian immigrant name Assunta Cantisano who decided to support her family during The Great Depression by selling her homemade pasta sauce.
Since 1937, Ragu has upheld it’s commitment to quality and using only the freshest Californian tomatoes. That’s why it is still a personal preference these days when I cook pasta dishes for my family. When I was a kid my mom would make certain meals like clockwork each week. We had pork chops, meatloaf, Shepard’s pie, and spaghetti each week. Sometimes, she would mix things up by making American Chopped Suey instead of spaghetti noodles which I loved! My mom usually prepared it the traditional way with hamburger meat, and always Ragu Old World Style Sauce, but sometimes she gave it a real twist and made American Chopped Suey with Sausage.
I have no idea where my mom got the idea from but the combination of pan-fried breakfast sausage links and pasta is just so good! Plus, it is actually much easier to prep since all you have to do is slice the sausage into little chunks. Since they are pre-cooked they take just under five minutes to heat up!
Since I grew up on Ragu pasta sauce, I tend to gravitate towards using it in my recipes as a tradition. These days, there are just so many wonderful flavors to use that recipe creations are endless. For this recipe, I used their Ragu Cheese Creations 6 Cheese sauce which worked out well!
Want to make your own pot of American Chopped Suey with Sausage? Here is what you’ll need:
- 1 box of macaroni pasta
- 1 jar of Ragu Pasta Sauce
- 10 pre-cooked breakfast sausage links
- 1 small green bell pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon of black peppers, onion powder, garlic powder, and oregano
- 2 tablespoons of fresh parsley.
Directions:
Boil your pasta until al dente
Cut up your bell pepper into tiny pieces
Cut up your breakfast sausage links into little chunks and pan fry them with the green pepper
In a large stockpot add drained pasta, spices, sausage, and Ragu; mix well and serve hot
We used to eat this meal with buttered sliced white bread when I was a kid. You can serve your American Chopped Suey with Sausage with garlic bread, & a salad.
I make American chop Suey a lot, but I have never made it with sausage before. I am going to have to try that because I think my family would love it.
Looks easy and delish! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
It’s funny how we use so many different products every day and we don’t even know how or why they got started. I have always loved the taste of Ragu and they have such a great variety of flavors. Great recipe. thanks.
This looks like a perfect fall recipe, to have on a cold night. I am going to tell my Mom about the contest, she is always good at coming up with great tasting ideas.
I’ve never had chop suey of any sort but this looks very tasty though.
