A delicious a easy muffin recipe made with avocado and ripe banana. This muffin is not too sweet and depends on the ripe banana for natural sweetness
Do you believe it was only a little more than a year ago that I tasted my first avocado? Seriously, I must have lived a a deprived world since my mother never cared for the fruit. She claims it is tasteless so she never Incorporated it into our meals.
As a a young adult, I never even had the urge to try it, and it was never on my radar. Now that I have kids, one day I decided to try the unique fruit and was in love at first bite.
However, if avocados are your jam, this recipe is perfect for you to try out! It has been a hit with many readers who rave about the subtle sweetness and fluffy texture.
I love banana muffins and have several recipes that have been in my family for a while. I decided today to experiment and was super happy with the results, and taste of my avocado banana muffins.
Avocado taste in Baked Goods
The first thing I noticed about this avocado banana muffins recipe is that the muffins have a slight hint of avocado flavor.
No, they do not taste like guacamole so don’t fret! The sweet, and moist banana flavor is prominent enough to be the star of the show.

Interesting combo!
I used to HATE avocados. Then my boyfriend made this amazing salsa using them a few years ago, when we were camping, and it was SO good. Now – I’m not a lover of them exactly – but definitely experimenting to see what I do like :) Great idea in this recipe!

I’m a big fan of muffins, so I love this healthier option. I know what I’m making this weekend.

I love avocado! I don’t think I have ever baked with it though. Definitely need to try this!

YUMmmmm.
May I have one, please? x

Any advice for skipping the eggs? Hubby is allergic :(
Amy says
Not sure? Some say subbing in chia seeds works, but I am not sure how the consistency would be?
Heather says
My daughter is allergic to eggs. We use applesauce instead of eggs. 1/3 cup of applesauce is equal to one egg
Irene says
Could I substitute the applesauce for the milk you think ?
Amy says
Hello, I have not tried this with variations so I cannot be 100% sure. Sorry!
Rachel says
Doing gelatin eggs. One egg substitute would be 1 tablespoon gelatin powder and 1 Tablespoon water. Let it sit for a bit then throw everything in a blender except for the dry ingredients.
Jenna Wood says
I cook with avocado often- I recently made a peanut butter avocado dairy free pudding that disappeared over the holidays. I haven’t made muffins in a whole so I will have to try this out!
Penny says
Would you be willing to share your recipe of this pudding?

Just finished making these and they were gone within 5 minutes! There’s an added guilty pleasure knowing that it’s that much healthier for you by substituting butter with avocado. And what an interesting flavor! I’d like to tweak it to make it my own. Nevertheless, thank you for sharing!!
Amy says
Great! So nice to hear you tried them! Using extra ripe bananas makes them sweeter too!
Laura says
Do you think whole wheat flour would work in this recipe? Looks delicious!
Amy says
Yes I do!
Jackie says
I used coconut flour and honey instead of regular flour and sugar. It’s not working for me. :(
Any suggestions?
Amy says
Hi Jackie, I am sorry. Sometimes recipes are temperamental and this must be one of them. I only tested it as written.
Kathleen says
I used apple sauce instead of sugar and they came out all flat and gross. :(
Amy says
Oh man, I never tried them with anything but sugar so I do not recommend it! Sorry!
Val says
I made this and they are good, even froze some and no problems.
Sarah says
I made these this afternoon for my very picky 18mnth old. He will not eat banana or avacado by themselves. Handed him one just now and he loved it. The only thing I did different was added an extra banana.
Rose says
I am going to make a batch of these for my 7 month old granddaughter, leaving out the sugar, do you think I can add in some blueberries? X
Amy says
Sorry, I have not made them with substitutions so I do not want to say yes or no. Let me know if you try them though. :) Thanks for the visit!
Amy says
Their quite nice, I used gluten free flour, and cooked them for 20. I put a bit of golden syrup on top to sweeten them a bit more. But great recipe :) thank you
Renee says
I stumbled upon this recipe when searching for ways to incorporate more veggies into toddlers food. I happened to have everything I needed to make. I used sugar in the raw and added applesauce. I also used whole milk. They turned out great! So moist and delicious and can barely taste the avocado but happy it’s in there! My son was calling it “cake” and it’s nice knowing its sweet but loaded with nutrition.

Thanks Amy. Since the beginning of this New Year, my resolution has been to cook something healthy for my family. And after seeing your yummy avocado banana muffins, I really feel like trying it. Just like you I have never tried baking avocado and it mostly ended up in my salad. I am going to try this and enjoy the surprised expression on the face my kids and husband.

Ingredients list milk but there is no direction when to add it Do I need it or was this an error?
Thanks
Amy says
Sorry, it is with the wet ingredients now. Thank you!
Leona says
I am new to alternative baking….these were super easy, however I think I would add a bit of agave as it was not sweet enough for my family! Also added a few mini chocolate chips and vanilla.
Thanks for giving me a starter recipe to make my own!
Tiffany says
Tried this with coconut flour due to my daughters allergy and it was awful! Super bummed ☹️
Ana says
I thought I was going crazy when I was following the directions and the salt and sugar wasn’t listed. I went ahead and baked it without those 2 ingredients. It’s in the oven now. I hope it still comes out good. ?
Amy says
Hi, they do not have any of those and are just naturally sweet. They are meant to be healthy and not like conventional sweets. Thank you for stopping by!
Dayna says
I was reading the comments about how you have to add sugar but there isn’t a measurement on how much sugar to add!
Iyah says
Hi Ms. Amy! Is there any substitute for the honey? Thanks!
Amy says
Hi Lyah,
You could use 2 tablespoons of brown sugar!
Courtney says
Honey is added sugar if used, and there is added sugar in the chocolate chips so saying this recipe is naturally sweet mostly true but not really lol. I plan to use raisins instead of the morsels and not add the honey and I am sure they will still be good :-). Thanks for the recipe!
Amy says
Hi! Honey is naturally sweet though so I think that makes sense. The chocolate is something to think about! I think these will be ok with raisins, but the honey really helps!
Cassandra says
Made these, omitted the oats, and added a few additions/alterations: tbsp of hemp hearts, 1/8 tsp chia seeds, 1/4 tsp honey, 2 tbsp of chocolate chips (I used dark) and 2 tbsp of chopped dates, 1 1/2 tsp of turmeric, 1/2 tsp of lemon juice, 1 tsp ginger, and 1 tsp cinnamon I used oats, flax seed, chia seeds, hemp hearts, and coconut shards for the topping.
I found the dates and the chocolate chips to be such a great combination. I added some of these ingredients because I have digestion issues. .
Thank you so much for this yummy recipe!
Amy says
Hi Cassandra! Thank you, for stopping by! Much appreciated!

Can you use frozen avocado and frozen bananas?
Amy Desrosiers says
Hi, they wont blend together to be as creamy!
Cynthia says
Can I sub 2% milk for whole milk. And am I correct that I read I can use whole wheat flour?
Larry says
Very tasty. My wife is a big avocado fan and I can take them or leave them. But being a big chocolate fan, I find the flavors a nice blend. But they seem awfully heavy. I’ll have to check my baking soda, but they may even need a little bit more leavening, in my opinion. I also wonder about it, since the avocado and banana measurements are inexact. Nevertheless, worth trying again. Seems we always have the ingredients on hand!
