Today, I am sharing how I survived a house fire, and how you can make your home safer with First Alert Sealed Battery Alarms.
I survived a near fatal house fire. Those words are some that I never imagined I would have to replay in my mind until the tragedy of a total loss hit my family, now almost 20 years ago.
My House Fire Takeaways
Over the years, I have recounted my full story time after time. But, today I just want to share some major highlights from that life altering day that our childhood toys, pets, and life as we knew it went up in flames.
The first takeaway is that kids should always be monitored. You never know when an innocent action can cause a butterfly effect of pure tragedy. Playing with lighters is no joke!
Parents Turn into Heroes
Did you know that deep inside of us, we have the capability to be heroes? My dad demonstrated his true love for us kids when he went back into a home filled with thick, black, smoke to save all his children.
He couldn’t see, and couldn’t breathe, but he wanted his kids out safe- even if it meant running through a direct fire path. If that doesn’t speak volumes of love and heroic actions, I don’t know what does.
Smoke Inhalation is not Fun
When you have a house fire, the oxygen gets sucked away so fast that you cannot breathe. Smoke inhalation is real, and still affects me to this day.
Memories Are Lost
You will lose everything from your baptism outfit, to your favorite collection in a flash. There is no saving anything once the flames and smoke become so intense. But, of course human lives are the most crucial of all.
Fire Alarms Save Lives
Most importantly, fire alarms SAVE lives and help to ease property damage. Ours did NOT work. They never went off because my parents kept putting off changing the batteries. Perhaps you might be guilty of this too?
If our fire alarms functioned properly, we could have all escaped immediately. Chances are, we also could have even saved most of our home because we would have had the opportunity to shut the door and react faster. Our pets could have been removed, and the outcome would have been a whole lot differenter.
As an adult, I have been on top of always ensuring our family’s fire alarms are in working order. When we purchased our new home in 2017, we were graced with First Alert 10-Year Combination Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm.
However, after having a fire, I feel as if I can never be safe enough so Jared installed some additional First Alert 10-Year Combination Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms in our home since it is pretty spacious.
Benefits of 10 Year Sealed Alarms

- No late night low-battery chirps- we all know how annoying those constant beeps can be!
- First Alert 10-Year Combination Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms provide an End-of-life warning which lets you know when it’s time to replace.
Installation is EASY
It took Jared about 5 minutes to install one First Alert 10-Year Combination Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm. He just needed a drill, and ladder to reach the high ceilings.
Fire Alarm Safety Law
Did you know all states have legislation requiring smoke alarms? States like New York and New Jersey have legislation that just went, or will go into effective that requires 10-year sealed battery alarms. Check the requirements in your state.
