Pineapple Citrus Topped Ham Steaks Ingredients
- (2) 14-ounce Hatfield Ham Original Hardwood Smoked Ham Steaks (2 double packs)
- 3 tbsps. unsalted butter
- 20 ounces crushed Pineapple reserve juices
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
- 1 tsp. fresh orange zest
- 1/8 tsp. ground clove
- 1 tsp. stone ground mustard
- 1 tsp. cornstarch *optional, use if you prefer a thicker sauce.
Tips for Making Pineapple Citrus Topped Ham Steaks
You will need a large skillet for this recipe, aluminum foil and some tongs for pan-frying the steaks.
I cut each 7-ounce ham steak into quarters for serving and presentation before searing.
Unsalted butter works best for a nice sear and seals in the ham’s natural moisture.
Some people prefer pineapple chunks for their ham meals, or rings. However, crushed pineapple was easy to strain juices from and was just the right texture for serving over the ham and potatoes.
Ground clove added a nice subtle depth of warm spice to this topping but if you do not have ground cloves, you can use cinnamon or nutmeg.
I like a thicker topping so I opted to add the constarch to my glaze, however the pineapple will naturally thicken it up so it can be omitted.
This meal reheats perfectly in the microwave, and can be made ahead of time. The sauce tastes even better when it sits a little while. This allows the flavors to really meld.
Brussels sprouts or asparagus are a great complementary side dish because they will help balance the sweet & savory of the meal. Fresh mashed potatoes and fixings like dinner buns, pickles, and olives would round out this Easter or holiday-inspired meal.
