Smoking is one of the most addicting habits to break, and it’s hard to quit even when you know you should. It can be tough because smoking is something that many people enjoy—and cigarettes are so ingrained in our culture. But there are plenty of ways out there for those who want to quit for good. In this blog post, we’ll explore some tried and true methods that have helped smokers kick the habit for years!
On 12/13/14 my father passed away unexpectedly at home. It was one of the most devastating things our family had to deal with. Losing a loved one is hard but losing one so unexpectedly at a young age is even worse. When our father’s autopsy report came back it was deemed that he died from smoking-related causes –mainly with his heart.
For years, I remember trying to get my father to quit smoking. Us kids would leave little notes around the house to encourage him to stop. In the medicine cabinet, his underwear drawer, truck–little blue sticky notes hung with messages of quitting. Sadly his attempts to stop were foiled when his own father died and set him back. My dad was a life-long smoker, and unfortunately, it contributed to his early death.
The one thing I never recall my father using to help him quit smoking was nicotine gum or lozenges. He did try the patch but reacted to it negatively with vivid dreams. I feel like if he had a better game plan, and more support he could have stopped and become a healthier individual.
Today, in honor of my father I am sharing some tips from friends that have managed to kick the smoking habit. While I do not smoke, I understand that ANY addiction starts with wanting to change inside first. If this small piece can inspire or add to anyone’s goals of becoming a non-smoker, my mission will be accomplished.
Steps to Quitting Smoking
- Get rid of all your cigarettes and lighters.
- Throw away or give away anything that reminds you of smoking, including ashtrays, matches, and cigarette packets.
- Make a list of reasons why you want to quit smoking. Remember, you have to want to quit–you cannot quit for others because that will never work!
- Set a date for when you will stop smoking. You do not have to wait for the new year!
- Write down the benefits of quitting smoking on a piece of paper that can be seen every day. Stick it to your fridge, desk, in drawers, etc.
- Drink lots of water throughout the day to help with cravings and have smoking cessation products on-hand like lozenges and nicotine gum.
