Stove Top Baked Beans are sweet & savory and made with common ingredients. Made on the stove, they are quicker and easier than oven-baked beans. Serve them with Gorton’s all new Premium Cod Fish Sticks for the perfect meal pairing. This post is sponsored by Gorton’s Seafood. All views expressed are that of our own.
Both baked beans and Gorton’s Fish Sticks are two foods that my mom would pair together when I was a kid. Typically, our meals on days when time was short always consisted of Gorton’s Seafood products paired with oven-baked fries, stove top baked beans or instant mashed potatoes.
Now, as an adult I have a soft spot for baked beans and fish sticks & thankfully, my kids do as well.
What to Serve with Baked Beans
One of my favorite foods to serve with baked beans is fish sticks. My mom would always buy the boxes of Gorton’s Fish Sandwich patties or Fish Sticks. Us kids love them back then, and even as an adult I still love them now.
Of course, the folks at Gorton’s are always consistently improving their classic flavors so it was a pleasure to have been one of the first to try their all new Gorton’s Cod Fish Sticks.
All New Gorton’s Cod Fish Sticks
Gorton’s all new Premium Cod Fish Sticks come in boxes of about 16 large-size sticks. In fact, since we are such Gorton’s experts (haha) these fish sticks are pretty much TWICE the size of their traditional recipe fish sticks.
I love that they are made with Trusted Catch Certified, 100% wild-caught cod which is very important to our family. We strive to eat mainly wild-caught seafood these days, and love that Gorton’s is keen to consumer wants.
After baking these Cod Fish Sticks, the first bite into them has Jared and I amazed! There is literally no fishy taste, and the filets inside are white, and flaky! If you have not tried them, you totally need to because they are *that* delicious!!
What to Serve with Fish Sticks
These cod fish sticks are perfect as part of a meal or snacking option.
My oldest loves them so much and often prefers fish sticks over sweet snacks. But, if you are looking to pair your fish sticks meal with a side, here are some of our favorite options.
- Baked beans (recipe below)
- Instant mashed potatoes
- Rice Pilaf
- Salad
- Mac & cheese
- Baked fries
- Carrots
- Fish stick dipping sauces
- Macaroni salad
- Potato salad
Now that you know baked beans go together perfectly with fish sticks, I wanted to share my quick and easy recipe that you can have on the dinner table in less than 45 minutes.
How to Make Stove Top Baked Beans
Making stove top baked beans is a lot easier than you think. For this recipe, I decided to use one can of kidney beans, and one can of cannellini beans to mix things up and they both paired together perfectly.
You only really need a one-quart sauce pan with a cover to make these beans, providing you make this recipe which serves 5.
Stove Top Baked Beans Ingredients
The ingredients for Stove Top Baked Beans are really common and you might even have some right in your pantry.
- 2 strips of raw bacon
- 15 ounce can of kidney beans (rinsed, and drained)
- 15 ounce can of cannellini beans (rinsed and drained)
- 1/4 cup (about half a medium-sized) vidalia onion
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard powder
- 1/3 cup ketchup
- 1/2 tsp black pepper (add a tiny bit more if you like heat)
- 1/4 tsp salt
Simply add the bacon strips to the saucepan and cook until crisp.
Remove the bacon, and leave the grease in the pan to cook the onion.
Cook the onion until slightly translucent (about 3 minutes) over medium heat.
Add in drained, rinsed beans and water.
Add in the spices, sugar, and ketchup.
Stir and cook over medium heat until boiling.
Once this is boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
Beans will continue to thicken as they sit. I recommend allowing them to “rest” for an additional 15 minutes.
Serve with crumbled bacon bits.
These can easily be reheated over low heat in a saucepan.
