Moms, we all know the struggle: wanting to prepare a delicious and impressive meal, but time and energy are limited. I get it because I too work all day as a teacher and must prepare meals for my family of 5. This homemade chicken cordon bleu recipe is your new weeknight hero.
It’s surprisingly easy to make, uses simple ingredients, and delivers restaurant-quality taste that will have your family raving. Plus, it’s kid-friendly, with the classic combo of chicken, ham, and cheese that’s sure to be a hit with picky eaters—especially when served with sides like Green Giant® Dino Veggie Tots– Broccoli & Cheese.
Chicken Cordon Bleu is one of my family’s favorite meals. Normally, we buy prepared varieties, but I wanted to try making it myself. After my first few tries, I never realized how easy it was. Yes, there are several steps to putting it together, but ensuring my family’s meals are of highest quality is important to me. The final outcome is so delicious, and the leftovers heat perfectly for the next day’s lunch or dinner. Plus, it is the perfect recipe to pair with your favorite variety of Green Giant® frozen vegetables or sides.
What are the Main Ingredients for Chicken Cordon Bleu?
- Boneless, skinless chicken cutlets (or thighs)
- Cooked ham slices
- Swiss cheese (or other melty cheese like Gruyère or Monterey Jack)
- Egg, grated Parmesan, and breadcrumbs for breading
- Salt, pepper, and other seasonings
Making Chicken Cordon Bleu
- Prep: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Whisk eggs, mix breadcrumbs, parmesan, salt, parsley.
- Prepare Chicken: Pound halved chicken cutlets thin.
- Dip & Coat: Dip chicken in egg, then dredge in breadcrumbs.
- Assemble: Top chicken with ham and cheese, roll tightly.
- Bake: Bake on parchment for 25-30 minutes at 400°F (200°C) until cooked through (165°F) and golden brown.
- Rest & Serve: Let rest 5 minutes before slicing and enjoy!
Can I use Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs Instead of Cutlets?
- Yes! Thighs are naturally moister than white meat cutlets, so they can be a good option if you’re worried about the chicken drying out. Be sure to adjust the cooking time accordingly, as thighs take longer to cook through than cutlets.
What Type of Ham and Cheese are Best?
- Use any type of ham you enjoy, such as Black Forest, Polish low-salt ham, honey ham, or smoked ham. For cheese, Swiss is classic, but other melty cheeses like Gruyère or Monterey Jack can work well too.
What Sauces Can I Serve with Chicken Cordon Bleu?
- A classic Dijon mustard sauce is a popular choice. You can also try honey mustard sauce, hollandaise sauce, or a simple creamy pan sauce. I love my homemade honey mustard sauce which I served mine with.
Green Giant® Vegetables are the PERFECT Side for Chicken Cordon Bleu
If you are not familiar with Green Giant® Frozen Vegetables, they have a ton of different varieties to choose from. Whether you prefer basic vegetables, pre-seasoned sides, or veggie shortcuts, they have a variety to choose from. Some of our recent favorites happen to be the below varieties. They are not only easy to prepare but they go so well with this chicken dish or many others.
- Starchy: Mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, roasted potatoes, pasta salad. You could also try Green Giant® Dino Veggie Tots – Broccoli & Cheese which are dippable tots that have cute dino shapes. They are made with broccoli and cheese and feature a crispy, craveable breading that my kids love. I love how easy they are to cook in the oven.
- Vegetables: Green beans, asparagus, broccoli, roasted vegetables. One of my favorite sides are all new Green Giant® Restaurant Style – Asparagus, Roasted Red Potatoes & Onions. We love how delicious these restaurant-inspired veggies are. They are perfectly seasoned, and take the prep work out of the side dish making them a perfect complement to a meal that might be a little more involved. I love preparing them in a skillet for the best texture and flavor!
- Salad: Simple green salad, Caesar salad, Waldorf salad.
How to Store Chicken Cordon Bleu
- Refrigerator: Transfer cooked and cooled Chicken Cordon Bleu to an airtight container within 2 hours of cooking. It will stay safe for 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes for best results. Microwaving can make it soggy.
