Can you make French toast with almond milk? Absolutely! This Gluten Free French Toast is made with gluten-free bread, almond milk, eggs, cinnamon, and vanilla for a cozy, custardy breakfast. I love how easy it is to make for a weekend brunch!
Recipe updated on 1/22/2021

Made with gluten-free bread, almond milk, coconut oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and cinnamon, this French toast can be made without gluten or dairy ingredients. It does contain eggs and almonds (tree nuts), though, so it is not suitable for everyone with food allergies. If you need to avoid gluten strictly, check every ingredient label and use clean cookware to prevent cross-contact.

Ingredients
Before starting this recipe, you’ll want to verify that you have the following ingredients:
- gluten free bread
- eggs
- almond milk
- refined coconut oil (or butter). Refined coconut oil does not taste or smell like coconuts. However, you can use the regular version if you do not mind the taste of coconuts.
- cinnamon
- vanilla extract
Equipment and Supplies Needed
We used the following equipment and supplies to make this recipe. Items that are optional or can be substituted will be noted.

Recipe Tips
This recipe is easy to make if you know the right tips and tricks! Here are my tips for ensuring your Gluten Free French Toast comes out perfectly.
Bread
For this recipe, we used Canyon Bakehouse bread. You can use whichever gluten free bread your family prefers. You will need around 10 slices for this recipe. If you are not avoiding gluten, you can use traditional sliced bread or Texas toast instead, but it will no longer be a gluten-free recipe.
Oil
I use coconut oil to keep this recipe dairy-free. If dairy is okay for you, butter or ghee can work too, but they are not dairy-free substitutes. You can also use a dairy-free cooking fat; just double-check the ingredient label.
Milk
I use almond milk because it makes a delicious French toast without dairy milk. You can swap it cup for cup with another milk you like. Oat or cashew milk can work too; just check labels for allergens and gluten if those matter for your family. Using cow’s milk will make the recipe contain dairy.
Storage
If you want to store your Gluten Free French Toast, just follow these easy steps.
Refrigerator
This can be prepared, cooked and cooled to be refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Simply place any extra toast in an airtight container and reheat in the microwave to warm and serve with syrup or powdered sugar.

Freezer
Additionally this gluten and dairy free French toast recipe can be frozen. To freeze, cook the French toast and allow it to fully cool. Place cooked slices on a baking sheet and freeze for 2 hours. Once slices are frozen, move them to a zippered freezer bag and store them in the freezer for up to 30 days time.
To heat, simply microwave and serve with syrup or powdered sugar.
