Are you thinking about making a Halloween Monster cake or cupcakes but hate baking? Maybe you are short on time like most of us these days? Regardless, today we are sharing how easy it is to decorate a store-bought cake for Halloween using candies from Color It Candy.
Halloween Season is in full swing now that October is tomorrow! Have you decorated yet? We have been decorated with pumpkin, ghouls, and ghosts for a few weeks now because I love to start early in the season.
My favorite part of Halloween is hands down the candy! There is nothing more exciting (even as an adult) than the deliciousness of brightly colored Halloween candies.
I love to fill up candy dishes with brightly colored candies like gumballs from Color It Candy. They have a great assortment of Gumballs, Pearls, and Sixlets that can jazz up your candy dish or Halloween sweet treats.
Today, we are featuring Color It Candy Sixlets, Pearls, and Gumballs.
You can find an abundance of decorative candies on their site that are perfect for any occasion. They have colors, and varieties to match any party, or celebration.
But, today we are all about decorating a store-bought, basic cake for Halloween.
Ingredients Needed for an Easy Halloween Monster Cake
- 7 inch Round White Cake Frosted, white. You can use any size your prefer.
- 20 Orange Gumballs
- 20 White Gumballs
- 25 Shimmer Lavender Sixlets
- 25 Dark Purple Sixlets
- 50 Black Candy Pearls
- 25 Shimmer Lime Green Sixlets
- 1/4 cup candy eyes
- 1 cup vanilla frosting divided into 2 bowls
- 1/2 cup orange frosting (if you cannot find this, use orange food dye)
- 1/4 tsp Neon Purple Food dye
- 1/4 tsp Neon Green Food dye
How to Make an Easy Halloween Monster Eye Cake
The first step is to choose which shape cake you prefer. Do you like round, rectangle, oval, or sheet cake size? This would also depend on how many guests you plan on serving. I also bought a half dozen of cupcakes in the same flavor. My total cost was: $18 for the Whipped Better Cream frosting.
When you order your cake, ask your bakery to use Whipped Better Cream style frosting and to just skim the the cake. You do not need any trim because you will be designing the remainder of the cake or cupcakes at home.
For this cake, I knew I would want vivid frosting so I chose Neon food dye. You can find this at any major grocer. I also picked up a can of orange frosting (easy to find this time of year), and 1 can of vanilla.
The folks at Color It Candy (our sponsor) sent me an assortment of Halloween Colored products. You can find their candies on their official website, Amazon, at party stores, and mass retailers in the baking section.
Once you set up your work space, and candies, add the vanilla frosting to two microwave safe bowls. You will also need an additional microwave-safe bowl for the orange frosting.
Melt them in the microwave on medium powder for 20 seconds & stir.
Using a small spoon, carefully add the drips of the green icing to around the cake top edge making a drip effect.
Repeat this action with the purple color.
Swizzle the orange frosting across the top of the cake.
Using a pastry squeegee, smear only the top surface to mix the colors around. Be sure not to disturb the drip effect.
Once frosting is complete, it is time to decorate with the gumballs.
Strategically place white gumballs by carefully pressing them into the cake’s frosting; repeat with the orange gumballs.
Next up, evenly place the green and purple shimmer Sixlets around the cake.
Next up, fill in the emptier spaces with the candy eyes, and then black pearls.
You can add plastic (non edible) spider effects to the cake (optional)/
How to Store this Cake
If you are not eating the cake right away, return it to the packaging it came from in-store and place it in the fridge.
This cake lasted 3 days with no issues in the fridge, but your results could vary.
Slice cake regularly when it is time to enjoy.
Halloween Cupcakes
I also decorated the store-bought cupcakes I purchased similarly. The recipe card features only the cake, but we wanted to provide inspiration for both.
We use Spider rings (rinsed & dried) as a non-edible component and added additional candies to each. I mixed up the designs a bit for fun.
