Sweet Caramelized onion dip is a creamy and delicious homemade onion dip made with real sweet Vidalia onions and fresh ingredients. It is the perfect appetizer for your next game day event, or party.
Football season has started and so has my love for cooking in my new kitchen. Now that we have finally unpacked all the boxes we moved over last month, life is good.
I am a lot less stressed and have started back up in the kitchen. Today’s recipe is one that will have your game day guests raving!
Homemade Caramelized French Onion Dip anyone? This game day dip recipe has been a favorite of ours for about 6 years and is adapted from Alton Brown.
I love the sweet, slightly smoky flavor of this dip, and the fact that it has a lot less sodium vs pre-packaged dip mixes.
It takes about a 15-minute time investment to make but yields enough dip for 8 people. Best of all, this dip is not overly salty like many store bought dip mixes. I love to be able to control the sodium in my recipes.
Best Mayonnaise for Onion Dip
Our favorite mayo happens to be Hellmann’s. I love the creamy and delicious taste. The flavor is always consistent and makes delicious salads like this Chicken Salad with Grapes or this Turkey Avocado BLT. You can even make Chocolate Cake & Frosting with mayonnaise, or Apple Spice Crumb Cake.
Best Onions for Dip
I love onions so much and almost feel like they are “the cherry on top” of savory dishes. They bring so much flavor and flair to so many meals and appetizers like this Homemade Caramelized French Onion Dip. The best onions for this dip are sweet Vidalia onions. When pan-fried, they have a sweet taste that is not bitter and browns up nicely.
Spices Needed for this Dip
These days, many of you all are probably over weird recipe ingredients and tons of steps. We all know game days are suppose to be relaxing so the good news is this recipe is quick. You can actually make it the night before to save even more time and allow the dip to thicken up.
This dip uses common spices you probably have right in your pantry.
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
Pan frying the sweet onion gives this dip a deep, rich flavor that is like a party for your mouth.
How to maximize your onion dip flavor:
Allowing this dip to set in the fridge for at least 4 hours really help makes the flavors POP! Making it 24 hours in advance really helps the flavors to continue to meld perfectly.

I MUST make this! I love French Onion dip, so I think making my own would be a blast. That goes double for caramelizing the onions. That is some tasty tastiness.

Great recipe and super easy to make. What I do-caramelize your onions in cast iron and de-glaze with a splash of balsamic vinegar. I have made this many times and have requests for it at every potluck.
Amy says
Yes, I love adding balsamic! I added it to my Mushroom bites and de-glazed with it and was sooo good!
