If you love easy meals that come together quickly, you’re going to really enjoy this flavor-packed steak and grain bowl. I got the inspiration from a meal I kind of made up at a local sub shop. Years ago, they introduced steak & grain bowls that could be customized to your liking. I would always get the rice and quinoa base and add shaved steak, onions, and swiss cheese to it. One day, I got a side salad with honey mustard on the side and they gave me extra dressing. Since I am a huge fan of sweet and savory pairings, I decided to add the honey mustard sauce to my rice bowl and –oh my gosh, it was DELICIOUS!
That gave me the inspiration I needed to replicate my go-to takeout dish at home. I hope you all enjoy this Honey Mustard Steak Bowl with Rice & Quinoa. I know my family makes it a regularly rotated meal in our house.
Ingredients
Shaved Steak – You can find this in the beef area of your market. It has to be the shaved variety that is raw to get the best flavor and texture.
Grains – I am pretty sure my takeout eatery used Minute Instant Rice & Quinoa. It is made of brown, red, and wild rice and quinoa. It is naturally gluten-free, Non-GMO Project Verified, contains no preservatives, and is free of MSG, and cholesterol. Plus, it takes JUST 10 minutes to prepare and comes in convenient, pre-portioned bags.
Cheese – I used a block of swiss cheese that I shredded in my food processor. I find this is the best way to get a consistently creamy, even amount of cheese throughout.
Onions – I used yellow onion for this recipe, but sweet onions, or Vidalia onions would be amazing as well!
Honey Mustard – After I first made my own batch of honey mustard years ago, I can never go back to bottled. It is so easy and produces restaurant-quality results. However, if you are in a pinch or not that adventurous you can use your favorite bottled variety.
How to Make Honey Mustard Steak Grain Bowls
In a small bowl, add mayonnaise, honey, and dijon mustard; stir until creamy and combined.
Prepare Minute Instant Rice & Quinoa as directed while you cook the steak.
In a large cast iron skillet, over medium heat melt butter, and then add sliced onions. Season onions with salt and pepper to taste. Once onions start to become tender, add shaved steak. Season steak with salt and pepper and cook until just browned- do not dry it out.
Sprinkle in the shredded swiss and stir to melt.
Add Minute Instant Rice & Quinoa to bowls, and top with steak, cheese, and onions. Swizzle on honey mustard sauce before enjoying.
As you can see these bowls were so delicious! In fact, I feel like I could eat this meal EVERY day! If you happen to have any leftovers, check out how to store them below.
Storing Leftovers
This meal is so good that you really won’t have many leftovers. However, if you do, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. I do suggest storing any leftover honey mustard separately. To heat, microwave in minute increments until cheese is melted, and warmed throughout. Add honey mustard before enjoying!
