Valentine’s Day might be just around the corner, but you don’t need a calendar to tell you when to treat the people you love. Whether you are planning a grand romantic gesture or simply looking to brighten a Tuesday night, these Strawberry Heart Cream Puffs are the perfect solution. They are light, airy, and filled with a combination of fresh berries and velvety whipped cream that feels sophisticated yet remains incredibly approachable for any home baker.

The Magic of Date Night at Home
For many of us—especially those with young children—the idea of a quiet, candlelit dinner at a crowded restaurant on February 14th feels more like a logistical hurdle than a romantic escape. Between finding a babysitter and navigating menus, the stress can sometimes outweigh the joy.
In our house, we’ve learned that the best celebrations often happen after the kids are tucked away in bed and the house finally falls silent. This is when the “at-home date night” shines. It’s about slowing down, opening a bottle of wine, and sharing a dessert that feels special. These Strawberry Cream Puffs were born from that exact need: something impressive enough to feel like a celebration, but simple enough to whip up with little ones.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
If we’re being honest, traditional French pastry dough (the kind used for fancy cream puffs) is a bit of a nightmare. It’s notorious for being finicky, requiring a stressful routine of boiling, constant stirring, and perfectly timed egg-mixing that can make even a confident baker want to give up. Who has time for that—especially on a busy weeknight?
That’s why I’m a huge fan of this “cheat code” version: Store-bought puff pastry. By using a high-quality frozen pastry, you take all the guesswork out of the kitchen. You’re basically guaranteed a flaky, buttery, golden result every single time without the flour-covered meltdown. Plus, when you use a heart-shaped cutter, you turn a simple box of dough into a total masterpiece that looks like you spent hours at a bakery. They’re light enough that you won’t feel like you need a nap after dessert, but they’re still indulgent enough to satisfy that late-night sweet tooth.

How to Make Strawberry Heart Cream Puffs
No romantic dinner is complete without a show-stopping dessert, and these heart-shaped treats are as yummy as they are beautiful. The best part? You only need a handful of ingredients and about 20 minutes of active work time.

The Ingredients
- Heavy Whipping Cream: Look for heavy whipping cream for the sturdiest peaks.
- Vanilla Extract: A high-quality bean paste or extract makes the cream taste like melted ice cream.
- Powdered Sugar (Divided): Two tablespoons for the sweetness in the cream, and one for the final snowy dusting.
- Puff Pastry: Ensure it is thawed to room temperature according to the package instructions (usually 30–40 minutes on the counter).
- Fresh Strawberries: Sliced thinly so they layer beautifully.
- Heart-Shaped Cookie Cutter: This adds the “wow” factor, though squares or circles work just as well in a pinch!

Making Heart-Shaped Cream Puffs
- Prep the Oven: Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on your puff pastry packaging (usually between 375°F and 400°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Whip the Cream: In a chilled large bowl, combine the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whisk on high for 3–5 minutes. Watch closely! You want stiff peaks—where the cream stands straight up when the whisk is lifted. Once finished, tuck it in the fridge to stay cold and firm.
- Shape the Pastry: Unfold your room-temperature puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Use your heart-shaped cookie cutter to punch out as many shapes as possible. If you don’t have a cutter, simply use a sharp knife to slice the dough into even rectangles or squares.
- Bake to Golden Perfection: Place the hearts on your prepared baking sheet and bake according to the package instructions. You are looking for them to be puffed high and deep golden brown.
- The Assembly: Allow the pastry to cool for at least 5–10 minutes. If they are too hot, your cream will melt instantly! Once cooled, carefully slice each heart in half horizontally (like a sandwich).
- Layer and Fill: Place 3–4 strawberry slices on the bottom half of each shell. Pipe or spoon a generous dollop of the chilled whipped cream over the berries.
- The Finishing Touch: Place the pastry “lid” back on top. Sprinkle the remaining tablespoon of powdered sugar over the hearts for a professional, bakery-style finish.

Serving Tips
These are best served immediately to enjoy the contrast between the crisp pastry and the soft cream. However, you can prep the cream and slice the berries hours in advance. When the kids are asleep and the oven is warm, simply bake, fill, and enjoy your perfect Valentine’s moment!
FAQS
Can I make these in advance? While you can whip the cream and slice the strawberries a few hours early, it is best to assemble the puffs right before serving. Puff pastry is high in moisture and can become soggy if it sits with the cream for too long in the fridge.
What if I don’t have a heart-shaped cutter? No problem! You can use a sharp knife to cut the pastry into triangles or squares. They will still puff up beautifully and taste exactly the same.
Why didn’t my puff pastry rise? The most common culprit is using dough that is too warm. If the pastry gets too soft while you are cutting the hearts, put the tray in the fridge for 10 minutes before sliding it into the hot oven. The cold butter hitting the hot air is what creates those flaky layers.
Can I use frozen strawberries? For this specific recipe, fresh strawberries are highly recommended. Frozen berries release too much juice as they thaw, which will make your whipped cream runny and your pastry damp.
How do I store leftovers? If you have leftover assembled puffs, store them in an airtight container in the fridge. Note that the pastry will lose its “crunch” by the next day, but they still make for a very tasty breakfast treat!

This is such a great idea! I might have to send this post to my husband because I’m constantly trying to get him to cook dinner for me. (The last time he cooked for me was before we were married!) LOL.
I love that this is simple with very little clean up and is totally something he can make on his own without destroying my kitchen!

How many oz of puff pastry dough?
Hi, it is one package. I am not sure of the ounces of the full package.
Thank you
Would this be 2 puffs per serving?
Hi, one puff is a serving.
Do you only get 4 hearts from each sheet of puff pastry? Do you double the puff pastry? Thank you?
Darlene Geyer I wished your question was answered… I have the same.. Kinda confusing to me LOL. I mean do you take both puff pastry sheets ( per 1 pack) and cut and put them on top of each other? (But if you get 8 per recipe then that wouldnt be right UGH..Sounded simple and probably is)…Then cut in half, fill and put top back on? And wonder if they freeze well?
Hello, these are cut into heart shapes, or rectangles if you choose. You bake them according to instructions, and then carefully slice them once cool in half. They do not freeze well with cream.
Thank you,
Amy
Can you seal up the pastry with the cream & strawberries inside and bake them that way using this recipe?
Hello, no you cannot. Unfortunately, they would not bake up. The puff pastry would not bake and the cream would melt away for this particular pastry.
