Flavorful combination: The combination of savory sausage, melted provolone, and tangy marinara sauce creates a blend of scrumptious flavors.
Easy to make: These sandwiches are simple to prepare, making them a convenient option for busy game days or weeknight dinners.
Customizable: You can easily customize your sandwich by adding your favorite toppings, such as roasted red peppers, sautéed mushrooms, or pickled onions.
Hearty and filling: The combination of sausage, bread, and cheese makes these sandwiches a hearty and filling meal.
Ingredients for Spicy Italian Sausage Subs
- Spicy Italian Sausage: We used Premio Spicy Italian Sausage which can be grilled, or pan-fried.
- Provolone Cheese: Melty and gooey, provolone cheese adds a creamy and rich texture to the sandwich.
- Marinara Sauce: A tangy and slightly sweet sauce that complements the savory flavors of the sausage and cheese.
- Roll: We used buttery brat buns from Walmart. These buns come in 6 packs and were the perfect size for these Italian sausage subs.
- Butter: Melted and used to brush the buns with a blend of herbs before being briefly broiled.
- Herbs and Spices: Oregano, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes are added to the butter to enhance the flavor of the sandwich.
How to Make Spicy Italian Sausage Subs
Cook the sausage: Cook the Premo Sausage links on a grill over medium heat until browned and cooked throughout.
Prepare the butter mixture: In a small bowl, combine the butter, and Italian herbs and spices.
Assemble the subs: Place a sausage link on each roll. Top with marinara sauce and provolone cheese.
Brush on butter: Brush the butter mixture over the sandwich rolls.
Broil for a crispy finish: Place the assembled subs under a broiler for 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Recipe Variations
- Add hot sauce: Drizzle a spicy hot sauce, such as Sriracha or Frank’s RedHot, over the assembled sub for an extra kick of heat.
- Different sausage: Use sweet Italian sausage to lessen the heat and add a sweet kick.
- Vegetarian option: Replace the sausage with grilled vegetables, such as zucchini, eggplant, or bell peppers.
- Add cheese: Try adding a second layer of cheese, such as mozzarella or Swiss, for a gooier and more cheesy sub.
- Include fresh herbs: Garnish your sub with fresh basil or parsley for a bright and herbaceous flavor.
- Bread swap: Use a French baguette for a crispy crust and a chewy interior.
Recipe Tips
Cook the sausage thoroughly: Ensure that the sausage is cooked through to prevent foodborne illness.
Don’t overcook the sausage: Overcooking the sausage can make it dry and tough.
Use high-quality ingredients: Fresh bread, good-quality cheese, and flavorful marinara sauce will make a big difference in the taste of your sub.
Experiment with different toppings: Feel free to add your favorite toppings to customize your sub.
Serve immediately: Enjoy your sub while it’s hot and fresh for the best flavor and texture.
Adjust the heat: If you prefer a milder sub, use a milder sausage or reduce the amount of red pepper flakes.
How to Store Sausage Subs
Store leftovers in the refrigerator: If you have leftovers, store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Reheat leftovers: To reheat leftovers, warm them up in a toaster oven or oven until heated through.
Avoid freezing leftovers: Spicy Italian sausage subs do not freeze well and may become mushy when thawed.
